Pastured Turkeys

We were treated to a pastured turkey this Thanksgiving, what a treat it was! Not only was it moist and delicious, it was exciting knowing even Cougar Country inhabitants like their animals pastured!

That’s one good lookin bird!  Casey’s rub is:

20 tablespoons butter

4 tablespoons molasses

1/4 salt

1/4 pepper

1 lemon

(Enough for a 20 pound bird)

Did anyone else get a pastured turkey this year?  Have you noticed any differences?  What did you pay for it?  Where did you find it?  Leave me comments explaining!

  1. I want to throw one on the smoker sometime soon. I am looking forward to hearing where everyone picked their “Pastured Turkey” up. Maybe I can get a post-turkey day deal on one.

    We should organize a CFS Turkey hunt next year. Truly pastured.

    Sadly our Turkey Day bird was not Pastured but it was free at Marguerite’s Dad’s house.

  2. We’re lucky Casey’s parents bought theirs– $3.50/lb! As I looked around the internet it sounded like a screaming deal. Other birds were $4.65/lb for this size of turkey.

    I’d love to try a smoked turkey!

  3. We had a pastured bird a couple years ago. We cooked it according to normal instructions and it was really tough. We have pastured chickens now and have found that pastured birds of any kind cook better at lower temps and for longer durations giving time to break down their tougher stronger muscles and connective tissue. I think if we did another pastured turkey it would turn out much better. They are very expensive. One of my favorite food websites had a method for cooking a pastured turkey. See link below.
