Pipes of Pain

We’ve got 8 new toys in the gym. Lovingly known as the Pipes of Pain, these PVC pipes are a useful tool for mobilizing sticky tissue. Just like any of our mobilization tools, however, there are better and worse times/places to use them. I find they work well on meaty areas such as the hamstrings, calves, quads, glutes, hip flexor area and lats. They work well to get in slightly smaller areas with a little bit more accurate pressure than the foam rollers. They do not work so well in bonier areas where either a softer (foam roller) or more precise ( lacrosse ball) touch is desired. You may also find the need to temper the pressure a little by rolling both legs at the same time or putting more of your body weight on the floor and sightly less on the portion of you being rolled. All that to say, enjoy your new-found mobility at the proverbial hands of the Pipes of Pain, but don’t end up with bruised bones or tender tendons!

135 pound Thruster, 15 reps
Run 200 meters
95 pound Thruster, 20 reps
Run 400 meters
65 pound Thruster, 30 reps
Run 800 meters

  1. 11:35, sub’d tried 95# but shoulder said no, did 105# Frt squats 15/20 then 30-45# Thrusters (sigh) on a positive note the runs felt marginally okay – anything to not row. (Good job Kandi)!

    Surprised that the hardest part was getting some speed going for the 800m sprint. Runs are slowly coming together, getting closer to my old pace, but they are still kicking my butt more than they should. Not quite “fairly fast fora fat fella” status yet.

    We all used one bar and changed our own weights.

    For some reason I thought this was going to be more fun than it was. Not quite sure why I would ever think running and Thrusters would be fun. They never have been in the past. First two runs were more like a shuffle. Up hill runs killed me going out. At our next location if we ever move I am going to hold our for a place with downhill runs in both directions.

    EO (pronounced ee-yo, short for Ioanna) and Nichole did awesome at the 9:15 class today. Really hitting your stride ladies!
